Determining smoothness with Real Time Monitoring.

Two months ago, the Netherlands had turned into a winter wonderland. We finally had the chance again to enjoy skating, throwing snowballs or making a snowman. Unfortunately, dangers also come along with this weather. Carefully making a turn with your bike on a slippery canal or making your way to the supermarket unscathed. But not only you or I suffer from these slippery conditions, just as slippery roads due to ice and snow are treacherous for humans, slippery tracks due to leaf fall are a problem for trains in autumn.

In fact, in slippery conditions, train wheels can slip. These conditions need not only occur during extreme leaf fall. Dew at sunrise or sunset, industrial or sea air precipitation can also cause slippery track. The wheel slip that occurs during train acceleration leads to infrastructure damage. The so-called “sliding” during deceleration causes damage to the wheels and bogies. Drivers should therefore accelerate and brake more calmly when it is slippery.
