Tim:
When I started working as a data scientist after my physics master’s, I always kind of felt that data engineering was not that exciting. Since switching to data engineering, I’ve found that it is actually very technical, complex, and challenging. We use many different state of the art techniques and always follow software engineering and dev-ops principles. A lot of standards come back into the work while unlocking and transforming data but in the end no two data sources are the same which is always a fun challenge. Also, I always have to consider the scalability and robustness of the solution something that makes it extra complex. I notice that my work makes an immediate impact, something I often missed in data science. I feel it is quite easy to explain the value of my work and I think every company can benefit from it. All in all, data engineering is exactly the challenge I was looking for.

From Data Scientist to Data Engineer: Direct Impact and Full Insight
What I love about my new role as Data Engineer is how practical and immediately applicable my work is. Whereas as a Data Scientist I often worked on experimental models, I now build data solutions that are immediately used in practice. What I also really like is that I now have full insight into where the data comes from and what is involved in unlocking and preparing that data.
I get satisfaction from seeing how my work facilitates the process for Data Scientists because they can now work on models with well-prepared, clean data. In addition, the robust data pipelines we build allow stakeholders to work on their own with tools like Power BI. As a result, they are less dependent on others and can reach insights faster. This hands-on role with immediate impact and overall overview makes the switch incredibly valuable to me.
Luuk:
I think the great thing about Data Engineering is that you make an immediate impact. A feature or bug fix that you develop is immediately of great value to the customer! It’s cool that you work with tools (such as dbt and Databricks) that are very mature and industry standards, but which also change a lot and where new features are often added.
As a Data Scientist, it is good to realize how a data stream is actually created and what is involved. This puts you in a better position to look at things like data quality from a different perspective. In short, Data Engineering is a very useful and fun skillset to learn!
Claudia:
After studying Business Analytics at VU University, I started working as a data scientist at DSL 6 years ago. A logical choice because I had already gained experience with data science during my studies, and…. data science was hot! I soon discovered that it is incredibly important to broaden your knowledge beyond the data science field, especially in the area of data engineering. This makes your job as a data scientist easier and more fun because you are less dependent on others. At my first client, Port of Amsterdam, I was lucky enough to learn from experienced data engineers and BI specialists. Eventually I found the work as a data engineer so enjoyable k That I totally made the switch. I especially like that the work is so results-oriented. Everything you create ends up in the data platform and will be used by people from the business. That gives me satisfaction! With this program I hope to transfer these valuable skills to other data professionals and in addition to showing how much fun data engineering is.
