Hiring a data engineer through Data Science Lab means a specialist employed by us joins your team to make data sources accessible, build pipelines and get the data model in order. We place data engineers, analytics engineers, data platform engineers and cloud data engineers in teams for projects, busy periods or interim roles.

When the data team can’t keep up with the workload

The data team is small and in the middle of migrating from the old data warehouse to Databricks. Finance is waiting for a connection to the new ERP system, marketing wants CRM data in the dashboard, and the overnight data loading job is failing more and more often, with no one having time to find out why. Then a colleague goes on leave.

Advertising a job opening isn’t always the answer: there will be less work after the migration, and finding a good candidate isn’t straightforward. You could also hire a freelance data engineer through a platform, but then you have to assess their quality yourself and determine whether the assignment complies with the rules for self-employed professionals.

What you need is someone who can quickly understand how your data sources and platform fit together, work to your standards and leave knowledge behind when the assignment is complete.

Which data engineer do you need?

Data engineer

Connects sources such as an ERP, CRM or case management system and builds pipelines that reliably load and transform data. Works with Python and SQL, and with Spark or Data Factory where appropriate. Monitors the loading processes to keep them running.

Analytics engineer

Works between data engineering and analysis. Turns raw tables into tested, documented data models that support dashboards and analysts, often using dbt. Ensures that a term such as active customer means the same thing everywhere.

Data platform engineer

Sets up the platform itself: workspaces, access permissions in Unity Catalog or Fabric, networking, CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code using tools such as Terraform. Needed when you are building a platform or when management, costs and security require attention.

Cloud data engineer

Builds data flows using cloud platform services such as Azure Data Lake Storage, Data Factory and Event Hubs. Alongside data expertise, brings knowledge of identity, networking and security in the cloud.

From initial conversation to handover

  1. Understanding your needs

We discuss the assignment, your platform and your team at your premises, at ours or online, and ask what the role needs to deliver.

  2. Suitable profiles

We introduce colleagues whose experience matches your stack and the challenge you face, explaining why we think they could be a good fit.

  3. Meet without obligation

You meet the candidate with no obligation and assess their knowledge, skills, personality and fit with your culture. Sometimes a second conversation is needed.

  4. Selection and start

You decide who to hire. If the fit isn’t right, we continue the search based on your feedback. We help with the administration and procurement process.

  5. Onboarding and access

We arrange accounts, permissions and access to the repository and environments together in advance, so the start isn’t spent waiting.

  6. Follow-up and handover

We stay involved throughout the assignment. We work to ensure that, by the end, the knowledge is captured in code and documentation and shared with the people on your team.

I'm very pleased with the collaboration. The close communication and detailed sprint reviews ensured that the model met our needs exactly, resulting in a successful launch for our customers.

Bring in a contractor, outsource or hire in-house

Bringing in a contractor works when your team retains direction and ownership but needs extra capacity or specific expertise: for a migration to Databricks or Microsoft Fabric, a series of new integrations, or cover during leave. The data engineer works from your backlog and follows your standards. There is no fixed minimum or maximum engagement period, and we agree with you whether the work is on-site or remote.

Outsourcing as a project is a better fit when you want a defined outcome, such as a new data platform, and want one provider to take responsibility for its design and delivery. We do this as part of a data foundation project or a Databricks implementation, with a full team including project management if needed.

Hiring in-house is the better choice when the work is ongoing and the expertise needs to stay within your organisation. A data engineer on secondment can lay the foundations and help your new colleague get up to speed. If someone from our team is such a good fit that you want to hire them permanently, we’re open to discussing it.

Frequently asked questions

Whatever your team needs: making new data sources accessible, building or fixing pipelines, setting up data models, adding tests and monitoring, or carrying out a migration. The engineer works as part of your team. We have experience working within client teams on projects too: at Waternet, we set up the MLOps workflow as part of its Data Lab team, and we still maintain it.

Our data engineers are employed by Data Science Lab. You have one point of contact for selection, onboarding and follow-up, and we stay involved throughout the assignment. The engineer can draw on colleagues, our internal lab and the Techdays where we share knowledge. With a freelancer, you handle selection and supervision yourself, and you are responsible for the arrangements governing their independent status.

Since 1 January 2025, the Dutch Tax Administration has resumed enforcement against false self-employment. Whether someone is effectively working as an employee is assessed based on how the arrangement works in practice, including the degree of supervision, their integration into the organisation and their independence as a business. If you hire a self-employed contractor, that is a question for you as the client. When you hire through Data Science Lab, our colleagues are employed by us. Have HR, procurement or an adviser review your own hiring policy.

They work with Python and SQL on Azure, Databricks and Microsoft Fabric, among other tools. We often use dbt for transformations and data tests, and define infrastructure as code, for example with Terraform. For Fokker Services Group, we are building a data platform with Databricks, Azure, dbt and SQL that cleans and models data using the medallion architecture. If you use Apache Airflow or another tool, mention it in the first conversation.

An account in your identity management system, such as Microsoft Entra ID; access to the repository and the development and test environments; and permissions for the data needed for the work. Grant permissions through groups and only where necessary, so you can easily revoke them at the end. Also establish who the client contact is, which standards apply and where the backlog is kept.

By planning for knowledge transfer from the start. Code stays in your repository, transformations have tests and descriptions, for example in dbt, and design decisions are recorded where your team can find them. Where appropriate, the engineer works alongside an internal colleague on the same tasks. Knowledge transfer happens when you want it, not just at the end of the assignment.

If the work is ongoing, you may be better off hiring someone directly. If you want a defined outcome rather than additional capacity, a project is a better fit. If the problem is unclear data definitions or ownership, extra engineering will do little to solve it, and it is better to start with data governance. If you only need reports, a BI specialist often makes more sense than a data engineer.
