Hire an MLOps engineer

MLOps specialists from Data Science Lab set up the path to production within your own team, as they did in the Datalab team at Waternet.

As part of Waternet’s Datalab team, we set up and maintain the MLOps workflow

Waternet wants the Datalab team’s projects to be put into use. As part of the team, we set up the MLOps workflow to make that happen, using Azure DevOps, Bicep, an MLflow model registry and CI/CD templates for deploying code and models to production. We also maintain the workflow.

Who keeps an eye on our models once they’re running?

Three models are live, each deployed differently by the person who built it. New versions are deployed manually, and no one can tell if the input data is drifting. An MLOps engineer sets up a single process with a registry, pipeline and monitoring.

An MLOps engineer builds the path all your models share

Discuss your models

Registry and CI/CD

Every model version goes into a registry, and every change passes the same tests, as at Waternet with MLflow and CI/CD templates in Azure DevOps.

Templates for future models

A standard approach that carries over to the next project, like the MLOps lifecycle with reusable templates we set up for GVB in Databricks.

Monitoring for drift

One approach to drift and outlier detection across all models, like the generic monitoring package we developed for Rijkswaterstaat.

Infrastructure on your own servers

Serving, monitoring and maintenance when data cannot leave your premises, as at LUMC on on-premises, sovereign infrastructure.

Talk to an MLOps candidate about your models and platform

  1. Models and deployment path

We discuss which models are running, how they’re currently deployed and monitored, and who owns them.

  2. Meet and choose

We introduce colleagues who know your platform. You can speak to them with no obligation and choose who to hire.

  3. Set up and document

The engineer builds in your repository. The pipelines, templates and alert rules remain in place when the work is done.

Is it time to bring in an MLOps engineer, or does something else need to happen first?

Talk it through with us

A good fit if

You already have models running or more on the way, and each model currently reaches production in a different way. Your team wants one approach it can maintain itself.

Not a good fit if

You don’t yet have a model that needs to go into production, or you want the entire MLOps setup delivered as a project. In that case, building a model or running a project is a better first step than adding capacity.

Time commitment and rate

The assignment determines how many hours per week are needed and for how long; we have no minimum or maximum duration. The rate depends on the expertise you need, the engineer’s experience and the length of the assignment.

Not a freelance arrangement

The MLOps engineer is employed by Data Science Lab and seconded to your organisation. Selection, onboarding and follow-up are handled through a single point of contact on our side.

Second an MLOps engineer, run MLOps as a project or hire someone permanently?

Secondment

Choose this if your team will retain ownership of the models and wants to learn to manage the path to production itself. We recommend this if you already have several models running.

As a project

Choose this if you’d rather have us design and deliver the path to production, with us taking responsibility. See MLOps.

Permanent hire

Choose this if MLOps becomes an ongoing part of your work. If our engineer is a good fit, we can discuss hiring them permanently.

Our MLOps engineers can draw on colleagues who have models in production

Those colleagues worked on registry, pipelines and monitoring at Waternet, GVB, Rijkswaterstaat and LUMC. They can also draw on our internal lab and Techdays. Data Science Lab has been operating since 2016 and is a Databricks Partner and Microsoft Partner.

Frequently asked questions

An MLOps engineer sets up the path each model follows from experiment to production. They put code in Git, record runs and model versions in a registry, build CI/CD with separate development, test and production environments, and set up monitoring and retraining.

On our staffing page, the MLOps engineer is listed among the data engineering roles. If you need an MLOps specialist for a particular platform, we’ll put forward someone who knows it.

A machine learning engineer takes a single model into production: from notebook to tested code, a training pipeline and an endpoint. An MLOps engineer builds the shared infrastructure used by all models: a registry, CI/CD templates, monitoring and agreements on retraining.

In small teams, one person often does both. If your main goal is to get one model live, read about hiring a machine learning engineer.

Google describes three levels. At level 0, everything is manual: the data scientist hands a trained model to engineers, new versions are rare and predictions are not monitored. At level 1, the training pipeline is automated and the model retrains on new data. At level 2, CI/CD also tests and deploys the pipeline itself.

If your team is at level 0 and runs more than one model, moving to level 1 is a job for an MLOps engineer.

They monitor inputs for data drift, predictions for prediction drift, data quality (missing values, incorrect types and out-of-range values) and, once actual outcomes are available, the model’s performance. Each signal has a threshold that triggers an alert.

Microsoft recommends choosing thresholds together with the data scientist who knows the model, to avoid too many alerts. In Azure Machine Learning, an alert can start a retraining job via Event Grid.

In most cases, Databricks recommends promoting the code: the training code moves through testing to production and trains the model there, because that code has been reviewed and tested. Promoting a trained model makes sense when training is very expensive or difficult to repeat.

In Unity Catalog, you assign an alias such as champion to the live version. Batch jobs and endpoints follow that alias, and lineage shows which tables were used to train the model.

A freelancer you contract directly must also work independently in practice. Since 1 January 2025, the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration has resumed full enforcement of this requirement. Someone who works through your backlog under your direction can quickly fall outside that definition.

Our MLOps engineers are employed by Data Science Lab and seconded to you. Ask HR, procurement or an adviser to assess how that fits your own hiring policy.

For high-risk AI systems, the AI Act requires, among other things, logging so that outcomes can be traced, human oversight and robustness. After deployment, the provider must have a monitoring system. According to the European Commission, these rules apply to most high-risk applications from 2 December 2027.

An MLOps process that records runs and versions and monitors models helps provide that evidence. A lawyer or your compliance department can determine whether a model falls under those rules. Read more about AI governance.

If you’re not running any models yet, there’s nothing to deploy or monitor. Start with data science instead. If you have one model that needs to go live, a machine learning engineer is a better fit. If the problem lies with the data itself, address the data foundation first.

If you want the entire process delivered rather than extra hands, MLOps as a project is a better fit.
