Power BI specialist in Rotterdam

We start with an honest assessment of your reporting, just as we mapped the data maturity of Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis in Dordrecht.

We conducted a baseline assessment of data maturity at Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis

The hospital already had a digitised patient record and a data foundation with a Business Intelligence Center. Through conversations with key people in healthcare, policy and IT, we assessed its maturity across culture, processes, technology and governance. The result: a baseline assessment and a concrete roadmap for growth.

Does our weekly report still rely on three systems and a spreadsheet?

Production data is in the ERP, hours are in the scheduling system, and corrections are in one colleague’s Excel file. We bring these sources together in a single semantic model, with consistent definitions and a refresh that no one has to start manually.

Working alongside the existing BI team

Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis already had a Business Intelligence Center. We assessed where the hospital stood and what steps were needed.

Refresh at the pace of operations

On shared capacity, Power BI refreshes a model at most eight times a day; on Premium or Fabric capacity, up to 48 times.

ERP without an export file

If you use Business Central, Power BI reads the data through API pages or OData web services instead of an export to Excel.

Each site sees its own figures

With row-level security, a site manager sees only their own location, while management sees all locations in the same report.

The reports people already open shape the new model

  1. Map the reports and their sources

Which reports are actually used, which systems do they come from, and where do departments calculate things differently?

  2. One model with consistent definitions

A star schema built on ERP, scheduling or healthcare data, with measures that calculate the same way for everyone.

  3. From testing to production

A deployment pipeline with development, testing and production stages. After that, either we manage the model or your own team does.

Can our own BI team handle this, or do we need a clearer question first?

A good fit if

Your reports draw on multiple systems, different sites or departments calculate figures differently, and you want management, planning and frontline teams to work from the same numbers.

Not a good fit if

The standard report from your ERP or patient record system is enough, or nobody knows which decision the report should support. Start with that question, or with a maturity assessment.

What determines the scope

The number of sources and sites, whether you already have a data platform or BI team, how often the figures need refreshing, and who will take ownership after delivery.

What about the reports you already have?

We won’t discard them. We look at which reports people actually open and build the model so the most important ones can move to it.

Import, DirectQuery or an underlying data platform: how up to date do your figures need to be?

Import with scheduled refresh

Choose this if a snapshot for each part of the day is enough, for example for revenue, production or occupancy. Our advice for most reports: start here and refine later.

DirectQuery with page refresh

Choose this if a planner needs to see what is happening now. On shared capacity, a page can refresh at most every 30 minutes; on dedicated capacity, it can refresh more often.

An underlying data platform

Choose this if ERP, scheduling and sensor data need to come together, or if you plan to add models later. Power BI then reads from the platform, for example on Microsoft Fabric.

From Dordrecht to Botlek, we’ve already worked with data from the region

Since 2016, Data Science Lab has been building data and AI solutions as a Databricks Partner and a Microsoft Partner for Fabric. In South Holland, we’ve done this for Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis and for Rijkswaterstaat at the Botlekbrug.

Frequently asked questions

Mostly on what sits beneath the report: which tables to connect from an ERP system, rostering system or patient record, where a measure such as occupancy or delivery reliability is calculated, and who can see what. That way, the same figure means the same thing everywhere. Whether you call them a Power BI specialist, Power BI consultant or Power BI expert makes no difference.

You can find our full approach, from the first model through to management, on the Power BI consultant page. If you want one of our colleagues to join your team temporarily, see Hire a BI consultant.

Yes. We carried out a data maturity assessment for Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis, which has a site in Dordwijk, Dordrecht. Our only office is in Amsterdam; we can come to you or meet online.

For organisations in the capital dealing with seasons, venues and ticket sales, we have a dedicated page: Power BI specialist Amsterdam.

A fresh perspective on what is already in place, and time to tackle work that has been left undone. Albert Schweitzer Ziekenhuis already had a Business Intelligence Center and a digital strategy, but lacked a clear picture of where it stood and what steps it needed to take. We mapped this out with a maturity assessment.

In Power BI, the work often involves a shared semantic model that supports multiple reports, and an established route from development through testing to production.

That depends on the capacity and storage mode. According to Microsoft, a model in Import mode on shared capacity can refresh on a schedule up to eight times a day; on Premium, Premium Per User or Fabric capacity, up to 48 times. A manual refresh using "Refresh now" does not count towards those eight.

If a warehouse planner needs to see what is happening now, you can use DirectQuery and automatic page refresh. On shared capacity, the shortest interval is 30 minutes. Change detection, which refreshes when a measure changes, works only on dedicated capacity.

With Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, you make the data available through API pages or OData web services and load it into Power BI Desktop. For the online version, Microsoft also provides ready-made Power BI apps for areas such as finance, inventory and production.

If your ERP system runs on your own server, you need an on-premises data gateway for refreshes. Most of the time goes into determining which ERP table contains which information. Read more about data in manufacturing.

Every tenant has a home region: the Azure data centre selected when the tenant was created. You can find it in Power BI under Help, then "About", next to "Your data is stored in". Workspaces can also run on capacity in another region. According to Microsoft, the West Europe Azure region is in the Netherlands.

Decide which patient or employee data may be included in the model with your data protection officer beforehand. For management purposes, a count per department is usually enough.

Yes. You define a role with a DAX filter on the location, then assign the right people or Entra groups to that role in the Power BI service. Note that the filter applies only to people with the Viewer role. Workspace admins, members and contributors can see all rows.

For branch reports, use an app or a separate workspace where managers have read-only access.

When management has all it needs from what the ERP system or patient record already shows, and no department needs to compare figures from two systems. If you need a single standalone report, custom-built Power BI dashboards are a better fit: we start with the decision the report needs to support.
