Hire a data architect
A colleague employed by Data Science Lab who documents architectural decisions and brings your team along, as we do in Waternet’s Datalab team.
We set up and maintain the MLOps workflow within Waternet's Datalab team
Waternet's Datalab team wants projects that are actually implemented. As part of that team, we set up the MLOps workflow, with an MLflow model registry, CI/CD templates, and code and models in production. We continue to maintain it.
Who ensures everything fits together when each team builds its own data pipeline?
Finance loads ERP data into its own database, marketing builds a lakehouse, and no one knows which table is correct. An interim data architect maps out the decisions, defines a target architecture and establishes agreements that teams can build on.
We approach the architect role from a strategy, platform or governance perspective
Target architecture and sequence
A data strategist translates goals into a target architecture and a sequence of steps, as in the growth plan for Nationale Opera & Ballet.
Platform design
A data platform engineer designs workspaces, access permissions and infrastructure as code, as we did for Vivara using Azure Databricks, Terraform and DevOps.
Layers and data model
An analytics engineer defines how raw data becomes usable, as we did for Fokker Services Group using medallion architecture.
Access and discoverability
A data governance specialist determines who can see what and where data can be found, as in the Concertgebouworkest data platform using Unity Catalog.
The architect starts with what’s already in place, not at the drawing board
-
Needs and profile
We discuss your platform, your teams and the decisions that need to be made now, then propose a colleague who fits.
-
Meet and decide
You can speak to the candidate with no obligation. You decide; if they’re not the right fit, we’ll use your feedback to keep looking.
-
Document and hand over
Decisions are recorded in a decision log and design document in your repository, so your team can build on them.
How do you arrange for an interim data architect?
Secondment or interim assignment
There is no fixed minimum or maximum assignment length. We agree on the arrangement, hours per week and whether to work on-site or remotely based on what the assignment requires.
How the rate is determined
The rate depends on the expertise required, the architect’s experience and the length of the assignment. We have extensive experience with procurement processes.
Employed by us
Our colleagues are employed by Data Science Lab; they are not self-employed contractors. Have HR, procurement or an adviser review your own contractor hiring policy.
Not the right fit if
The architecture is already defined and what you mainly lack is capacity to build it, or no one in your organisation is willing to take responsibility for the decisions later. In that case, we recommend an engineer or a conversation about ownership first.
An architect, an engineer or a whole project team?
A data architect
Choose this if teams make their own decisions and no one oversees how everything fits together. We recommend it when choosing a platform, planning a migration or adding a second platform alongside the first.
A data engineer
Choose this if the architecture is in place but you need people to build pipelines. Read more about hiring a data engineer.
A project team
Choose this if you want a new data platform delivered as a complete outcome, with one provider responsible for both design and delivery, through our data foundation.
Our architect won’t be working alone in your organisation
Data Science Lab has worked with data and AI since 2016 and is a Databricks and Microsoft partner. Anyone we place with you can rely on colleagues, our in-house lab and the Techdays, where we share knowledge.

First, we discuss which architecture decision is the biggest obstacle

Business DevelopmentStef is your first point of contact. In our initial conversation, we’ll discuss your platform, the options on the table and which profile is the right fit, in Amsterdam or online.

What architecture decision are we facing?
Describe your platform and the decision you need to make. We’ll reply by email or arrange an initial conversation.

Frequently asked questions
A data architect designs how data flows through your organisation: which sources it comes from, where it is stored, which layers process it and who has access to it. They then make sure teams build within that framework.
At Data Science Lab, an experienced colleague takes on this role, focusing on strategy, the platform or governance. You can see which roles we place on assignment on the overview page.
The architect decides on the structure: which platform to use, which layers to create and what conventions to set for naming and access. The engineer builds the pipelines and data models within that structure.
In a small team, one person often does both. As the platform grows or more teams start using it, it pays to make architecture a separate role, so someone maintains an overview while others build.
In an architecture decision record: a log of decisions. According to Microsoft, each record describes the context, the options considered, the outcome and the trade-offs, with a status such as proposed, accepted or superseded. If a decision changes, you write a new record that supersedes the old one.
That way, your team can later check why something was built as it was. The architect tests risky components in advance with a proof of concept.
That depends on what you need them for. For Fabric, Microsoft recommends a warehouse for SQL reporting with full transaction support and a lakehouse for large volumes of data, semi-structured data and machine learning. Both reside in OneLake in an open table format.
Databricks recommends the medallion architecture: bronze for raw data, silver for cleaned data and gold for models and reports. It is a recommendation, not a requirement. Read more about building a data warehouse.
You need to design access, lineage and ownership into the architecture; adding them later is difficult. In Databricks, Unity Catalog manages access rights, tracks lineage — where data comes from — and logs activity for audits. Objects have a three-level name: catalog, schema and table.
Who owns each definition is an organisational question. It belongs under data governance.
According to the Dutch government, the Dutch Tax Administration resumed enforcement against false self-employment on 1 January 2025. Whether someone is effectively an employee is assessed based on how they work in practice, including supervision, integration into the organisation and whether they operate as an entrepreneur.
An interim data architect hired through Data Science Lab is employed by us. If you hire a self-employed professional, that question is yours to address. Have HR, procurement or an adviser review your hiring policy.
The decision log, design documents and agreed conventions stay in your repository, not ours. Where appropriate, the architect works alongside an internal colleague who can take over the role afterwards.
If one of our colleagues is such a good fit that you would like to hire them permanently, we are open to discussing a transfer.
If you have one data source and a few dashboards, a dedicated architect is more than you need; an experienced engineer can make those decisions. If the architecture is already in place, you may need more people to build it out instead.
If you do not yet know what you want to achieve with data, start with a maturity assessment or an AI roadmap. Architecture without a goal becomes a diagram on the wall.
