Data Science Lab started out in data science in 2016. Based in Amsterdam, it works on data strategy, data platforms and AI applications, from implementation and adoption through to management. The consultancy builds on Databricks and Microsoft Fabric and lists case studies for clients including Rijkswaterstaat, St. Antonius and DPG Media.

DataNorth AI was founded in 2022 and has offices in Groningen and Amsterdam. The consultancy combines AI consulting, development and training, and offers a dedicated AI team for longer engagements. Case studies on its website include Scania Nederland, the municipality of Groningen and NIZO.
Xebia started in the Netherlands in 2001 and has grown into an international consulting, software engineering and training company, with its Dutch office in Hilversum. Data and AI are among its core areas. Its website lists data case studies for clients including Bakker Goedhart, Amstelring and bol.com.
Based in Utrecht, ilionx works in areas including digital strategy, cloud, data & AI and managed services. For AI, it offers AI strategy with a roadmap, MLOps and AI management. It also builds data platforms, with dedicated services for healthcare. One client case study covers Intergamma’s Snowflake data platform.

Utrecht-based Passionned Group helps organisations work in a data-driven way. It provides BI and data strategy advice, interim professionals such as data analysts, and training, including a three-day course on data mining with R. Xomnia describes itself as a data and AI consultancy. Based in Amsterdam, it works on cloud data platforms, analytics engineering and machine learning engineering. Its website features case studies for clients including Enexis, Rabobank and VodafoneZiggo, as well as a data science retraining programme for KLM.
Based in Breda and Utrecht, Cmotions works on data strategy, data engineering, data management, data analytics and data science & AI. The consultancy took its current form in 2024 following a merger with 2Foqus and Active Professionals. Its website lists projects for clients including Rijkswaterstaat, NVWA and Longfonds.
Founded in 2022, Nieuwegein-based Crux Digits describes itself as an AI consulting and engineering partner. The consultancy carries out AI audits and strategy work, builds models, AI agents and bespoke software, and offers AI management for SMEs. The case studies on its website are anonymised; AMAN AI is a project identified by name.

The 96 Dutch data and AI consultancies that Data Science Lab tracks.
Eligibility criteria
The consultancy has an address in the Netherlands, offers data science, machine learning or data analysis on its own website, and names at least one client or project there; a logo does not count. This applied to 41 of the 96.
Ranking
After Data Science Lab came the 9 consultancies with the most dedicated service pages for the four situations in the selection guide. Ties were broken by the number of pages on strategy, data platforms, scans and prediction, then alphabetically. At the cut-off (1 situation), the following made the list, with their page counts in brackets: Cmotions (3), Crux Digits (4), Data Analytics (3) and Digital Power (3). Valcon (3) missed out on alphabetical order; 9 other consultancies had fewer. Within the list, consultancies with the same score appear alphabetically. By that order, Data Science Lab would be in second place, behind DataNorth AI.
Selection guide
Only a dedicated service page counts, including for Data Science Lab; a mention, case study or tile does not. Production: MLOps, ML engineering or model management. Team: staff secondment, interim support or a temporary team. Training: a programme in data science, machine learning or AI development, not a course on using AI. AI Act: a service covering the AI Act, Responsible AI or AI governance.
Situations
We started with a first use case, putting a model into production, strengthening a team and training. ‘Choosing a first use case’ was dropped: 23 of the 41 eligible consultancies have a page for it, as does almost everyone in the top ten, so it does not help you choose. For the same reason, we dropped getting data in order (25), a scan (19) and prediction (14). ‘Complying with the AI Act’ (11 of the 41) took its place. The four situations covered by almost everyone are used to break ties. Whether Data Science Lab had a page for a situation played no part in that choice.
Considered
We checked Accenture, Deloitte, KPMG, PwC and other large consultancies. We could not establish an address or a named client from their websites, and where we could, they covered no more than one situation. Software vendors and inaccessible websites were not included.

A data science consultancy uses statistics and machine learning to answer a question or support a decision with data: through a prediction, classification or analysis. Good consultancies also put the model into production and agree on who will monitor it afterwards.

Data engineering makes sure data is reliable and available in one place: pipelines, storage and quality. Data science uses that data for models and analyses.
